Small Business Server 2008

One of my goals this summer was to migrate from my SBS 2003 server to the new 2008 version.  With a lot of planning, trial, and error, we are there.  The first key requirement was to move to a box with 64bit architecture due to the new system requirements.  Now, let's stop right there.  We are not talking about some big rack mounted server with miles of cabling and KVM's.  I purchased a Dell Inspiron 531S desktop from their Outlet store for less than $400 and this works very well for my needs,

If I were to install this same product for a business such as yours, we might very well be able to use the same hardware or be forced to move into a higher end piece of equipment.  The key to the equation is dictated by your specific business requirements as no two are the same.

So why do you need a Small Business Server?  Good question.  Most small businesses operate a mix of machines that were meant for home use and can quite possibly function very well in a small office environment.  These machines operate in what we call a peer to peer (P2P) environment where data sharing is not very efficient.

Suppose all of your team members could share and collaborate on documents, share the same calendars, and present emails to your customers with a professional appearance.  (no more Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo addresses).  You could be using your_name@yourcompany.com and access your data and email from anywhere, this is what Small Business Server can provide for you.  Not to mention such key items as data backup and retention.

All news accounts point that we are now coming out of this recession and what better time to focus your energy and resources so that you can be posiued to make that most of your business opportunities.
